Guidelines for Purchasing Flights

Flights to Iceland arrive into the Keflavik International Airport (airport code: KEF). Interns should plan on arriving to the airport by 11 am on their expedition start date. Global Treks staff will pick up the team at the airport upon arrival and transport everyone to the research base in Reykjavik (about 45 min drive).

Global Treks will transport the team to the airport on the last day of the expedition in the morning, so flights can be purchased to depart anytime on the final expedition day.

If interns wish to extend their stay earlier or later than the expedition dates, that’s no problem at all. Global Treks will pre-arrange a meeting place at the start of the expedition and assist with departures at the end of the trip. All interns should plan to leave the research base on the morning of the final expedition day.

Travel Insurance

For travel insurance, Global Treks and Adventures is not associated with anyone in particular or sell insurance directly. But, we have used insuremytrip.com in the past and had a good experience. They have several options you can review. There are also a million other options available online, so we recommend interns take their time and find a plan that fits individual preferences. Please note, while recommended, it is not required to purchase travel insurance.

Setting up Internship Credit

To earn college credit with Global Treks, the credits will actually be provided by your home university in one of two ways. The first is as internship credits or the other is as independent study credits. The university issues you the credit directly and you do not have to worry about transferring credits. If you are pursuing the internship credit option, the first step is to go to your internship office (sometimes it's also your career services office) and tell them you were accepted into an internship that you would like to get credit for. They will ask you how many credits you would like to pursue and most students sign up for 3 credits which is equal to 150-180 semester hours. Some students, and most masters students, sign up for 6 credits which is around 300 semester hours. Your university often has paperwork for us to sign agreeing to supervise you and provide a mid-summer and end of summer evaluation for them to base your grade on. If you pursue internship credit that typically opens up scholarships that turn an unpaid internship into a paid internship or help cover the travel costs. This is the most common way students pursue college credit and receive funding. Another approach is to talk to your advisor and pursue an independent study. Sometimes the department has research funding for this type of work. We can provide you with an official internship offer on our letterhead if they would like something more formal than our email offer to you. We are also happy to set up a conference call with your advisor or internship coordinator to discuss the work you will be conducting with us.
